Dental Implant FAQs | St. Petersburg, FL

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small screws or posts placed in the jawbone to support a dental restoration such as a crown, bridge, or full arch of replacement teeth. Most dental implants are made of titanium for strength and durability. Once placed in the jawbone, they fuse with the surrounding bone, stimulating new bone formation and providing a stable foundation for restorations.

How much are dental implants?

The cost of implants varies depending on the type of implant used, how many are needed, the complexity of the surgery, and what type of anesthesia is used during the surgery. To get an accurate estimate, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Fort.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are made of biocompatible materials and are designed to last for 30 years or more. For many patients, they last a lifetime.

Does dental insurance cover implants?

Coverage for implants depends on your type of insurance and the limits of coverage as well as whether implants are considered medically necessary. Some plans will cover all or part of the procedure. We recommend consulting with your insurance provider. We are always happy to submit insurance claims and work with you to maximize any benefits.

Do dental implants hurt?

The surgical procedure is not painful because we numb the area with a local anesthetic and can provide IV sedation to keep you relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. Following surgery, you will experience some discomfort and swelling that will peak around the third day, then subside. Most patients report that they are pleasantly surprised by how minimal any pain is. Ice packs and Tylenol or Ibuprofen are usually sufficient to maintain comfort in the first week.

What can I expect during dental implant recovery?

You should get plenty of rest. You will want to use ice packs on your cheeks to minimize swelling and rest with your head elevated to reduce inflammation and bleeding. Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed and drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

You will be on a soft diet for the first week. Foods like hummus, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, smoothies, and yogurt are ideal choices. As the area heals, you can slowly add firmer foods to your diet.

How successful are dental implants?

The success rate of implants is an impressive 96% when patients follow their post-operative care instructions.

Do implants require special care?

Once you are past the healing phase, you take care of dental implants like your natural teeth. Flossing daily and brushing twice daily is crucial, as is visiting your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and checkup.

Are dental implants safe?

Absolutely! Millions of individuals have dental implants and love the natural look, feel, and function. Many patients have had dental implants for decades with no problems and an improved ability to eat, speak, and enjoy life.
